Best Handwork - for reproduction of a John Goddard Tea Table - 2015 Northern Woods Show
This is a reproduction of a Philadelphia Rococo Dressing Table. The original is in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. The carving is attriuted to the Garvan carver. The Garvan carver is an unknown individual and is so named because his work is stylistically consistent with pieces in the Mabel Brady Garvan Collection at Yale University. This individual was highly skilled, and his work is exqusite. This is the finest example of the form that I have seen.
I am very happy with my results. As I was building it I knew that I was doing some of my best work. I also stretched my finishing skills by adding "age" during that process. In this case that meant varying the color, especially between high and low areas, and adding dark areas at the base of the carvings. I am pleased with the results and look forward to improving this process in the future.
