Best Handwork - for reproduction of a John Goddard Tea Table - 2015 Northern Woods Show
This is a reproduction of mahogany Newport six shell blockfront desk and bookcase. There are ten known originals, and they can be split into two groups based on design elements. This one is a copy of the closed bonnet version, of which there are six originals. The other four are characterized by an open bonnet. The original of this one dates to 1760 - 1790. It was built in Newport, Rhode Island probably by John Goddard.
One of the unique elements of this piece is the three doors on the upper case. Two of the doors are hinged together to form one larger door, which opens as a unit. Another thing to note is that the convex shells are applied, but the concave ones are cut from the solid.
The last time one of these desks came to auction was in 1989. It was the Nicholas Brown Desk and was of the open bonnet variety. It sold for $12.1M, which still is a record for a single piece of furniture.
